Privacy Policy

Last updated 20 July 2026

The short version: GridDown does not collect, store, or send your personal information anywhere. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. Your location and everything you create stay on your device. The app is built to work with no internet at all.

GridDown is an offline map for the outdoors and for emergencies. This policy explains what the app does with data on your device, and the few things it does over the network — all of which happen only when you ask.

Your location

GridDown uses your device location to show where you are on the map, to point the compass, and to record a track when you choose to record one.

  • Your location never leaves your device. It is not sent to us, and there is nowhere for it to be sent — GridDown has no servers and no account system.
  • Location is only read when you ask for it: when you tap the locate button, open the compass, start recording a track, or set your position as a route start. The app does not track you in the background.
  • It works fully offline, from your device's own GPS.

Things you create

Waypoints (pins), recorded tracks, and their notes are saved only on your device. You can export them as standard GPX files, which happens only when you tap Export. Deleting the app removes this data.

What GridDown downloads (only when you ask)

The app works offline. It reaches the internet only when you choose to download something, and every request is a one-way download of public map data — no personal information is ever included. Those sources are:

  • Map packs — pre-built state maps, downloaded from GitHub Releases.
  • Map data — as a fallback, tiles from the Protomaps public map service.
  • Terrain — elevation tiles from AWS Open Data (Terrain Tiles).
  • Forest roads — Motor Vehicle Use Map data from the USDA Forest Service.
  • App updates (desktop only) — checked from GitHub, and only when you press the update button.

As with any web request, the servers you download from can see your device's IP address and the file requested — that is how the internet delivers a file. GridDown adds nothing identifying to these requests.

Radio (Meshtastic)

If you connect a Meshtastic radio, GridDown talks to it over your local network to exchange messages and teammate positions. That traffic stays on your local network and radio mesh; it is not sent to us or over the internet.

What GridDown does not do

  • No user accounts or sign-in.
  • No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting sent off the device.
  • No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
  • No selling or sharing of data — there is no data collected to sell or share.

Children

GridDown does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
